What was the last great epiphany that you've had?
Submitted by Ross.
WOW!
An epiphany actually came to me late last night!
I have come to realization that I become easily bored with people, especially with men. I'm not sure why this is, but I guess I really do hate predictability. True, perhaps there HAS to be room for a small percentage of being predictable, but to have it all over in life unnerves me.
I discussed my epiphany last night with my friend "Cochese" (as I call him since he hates "Squishy" LOL).
Me: I just had an epiphany and your the only one available to me right now for me to share it
Him: ohhh
Me: People bore me
Me: I get bored with people
Him: i know u do
Me: mainly men.
Me: how do u know?
Him: yup yup
Him: cause u get bored with me real fast
Me: I do?
Him: yess u do
Me: Honestly I've never noticed
Me: wow
Him: well i have
Me: oh wow
Me: hope I don't offend you lol
Him: naaaaahhh u alwayz come back lol
Me: lol
Me: shut up!
Me: lol
Him: but imma boring person so it doesnt surprise me
Me: maybe this is why I really don't do the relationship
Me: thing
Me: I mean I try
Me: but honestly I end up getting bored with the guy
Him: i doubt it
Me: and I try to over compensate by giving myself too much
Me: or maybe it's the other way around
Him: hhmmm
Hmmmm Indeed.
What was your major or field of study in college? Did you wind up working in that field or using that degree? If not, what field have you wound up in?
Submitted by sneuf.
Seems like the age old question(s). Sometimes I shy away. Sometimes I answer ponly after a brief reflective moment.
College life aged me. It tore me down only to have me build myself up again.
I went into school with the declared major in journalism and a minor in African-American studies. I'm not fully sure why I choose journalism. I just knew I wanted to write. From my days in grade school I wrote poems, short stories and I probably was the only one that ever got a rush from writing an essay. I grew up knowing I wanted to be a writer, but as I got older other avenues of writing were introduced. I'm not sture what got me hooked onto journalism. Maybe it's because I'm a magazine whore, collecting almost every issue of Mode (now defunct), Black Book, Essence, Fader, Wax Poetics, Ebony and Jet. I even had my small pile of hair magazines, In Style, and a few issues of Vogue.
When I started college, I didn't expect for first hand journalism experience. I didn't expect that I would be published at 18/19 years old. I should have known better, because Howard's school of communications is anything but a two bit education institution.
I wrote my first articles for The Hilltop, which is the campus newspaper with the readership going beyond campus. My articles were small features on the arts, cultural events around the city and on campus. From there I did a stinct at a local publication and for an online site. I also did an internship for a conservative journalism organization in which I had to complete a research assignment. I had joined two national and internationally known journalism organizations.
While in school I was working as an administrative assistant with a Federal government agency. It was sorta hard to try to break out and do what I loved and still hold a (somewhat) steady job. However, my supervisor trid hard to help me use my talents. I was able to exercise my writing and editing skills a bit, but it still wasn't enough. I grew frustrated with my mundane life and did the ultimate... I took a leap of faith. Without securing another job, I left the Federal government. This was also the time I stepped down from school after a long on and off again battle of trying to press on in the midst of depression.
When I left school, and resigned from the government life got cazy and funny...but i could breathe for the first time ever. Within months I was working in my field doing what I loved. However, I was wearing too many hats at the same time.. pr writer..editor.... assisant editor....copy writer...copyeditor.......
Sadly I ended up leaving that job...stretched beyond my limits.
Currently, I still have a semester to go before fficially finishing my journalism degree. I've vowed to myself that I will return to do this.
As a new mom, I put myself on freelance status as I'm pitching ideas and picking up small "gigs." At this point I'm not exactly sure where I want to go with journalism. In recent years I'm learning that my writing goes beyond a box of unbiased writing or spunky feature writing. I'm sort of a jack of all trades in writing...
press releases
articles
copy writing
copyediting
and outside of journalism... creative writing.

What celebrity do you most often get told you resemble?
Submitted by Leets.
For the longest time people have been telling me that I remind them of singer/poet/actress Jill Scott.
The first person to ever call me Jill Scott was my old coworker, Mr. X. for the most part I think it was because at the time I was sporting really "au natural" hairstyles....
Twists...afros....etc.
However, it was also around that time that I started to share my writings a bit more with others. Jill had been on the underground and had just exploded onto the main scene around the time of my own "opening." I was introduced to Jill's vibe waaaay before mainstream got a grasp of her, but I never saw myself on her level per se. I admired her from the start and always felt humble when listening to her.. as I do with any other talented writer.
Somehow, when folks read my stuff, they immediately thought of Jill. When they looked at me.. round in the face, with curves, hips, thick thighs, brownskin, natural hairstyle.... they immediately thought of Jill.
No I wasn't trying to immitate or "cop" her style.
Before I even knew a Jill Scott I was pretty much doing the nubian, neo soul bohemian thing... or whatever you want to call it.
Actually I was just being me.
I must admit, it felt damn good when Jill came on the scene, because actually... I thought I was staring back in my face.
She is truly "Beautifully Human"
What was the most embarrassing hobby you've ever had?

*insert dramatic sigh right here*
Embarrassing hobby?
Taking those internet quizes/analysis and maybe even creating a few. Yet, who hasn't indulged in these? They are actually addictive.
The most recent one I took as a handwriting analysis thingy. It was pretty darn accurate except for the very first paragraph! That was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo FALSE!

What is one of your favorite poems?
Submitted by marvel is my pen name.
Even though I'm a Langston Hughes groupie... there are a lot of poets, past and present, that I admire and respect. One in particular is Jessica Care Moore. (She's married now.. not sure of her new name) However, this is one poem that caught my attention. I saw her perform this piece on a documentary called Slam! She was so on point, direct and aggressive with it.
(side note: i need to stop playing and return to going to hear some spoken word. true a lot of it is just bs, but the rest.... pure and refreshing. Damn I miss having class with tony medina.)
BLACK GIRL JUICE
By Jessica Care Moore.
MAPLE syrup
In the morning
Brown sugar that sweetens
Cinnamon twists in apple cider
Magic Black dust is inside her
Wheat Bread with homemade spread
This Juice goes straight to the head
Coffee without dairy cream
Any man’s dream
Black cat That will bring you luck
Aphrodisiac you’d love to suck!
You wish! Black twisted licorice.
Cooking black-eyed peas.
Wearing black knee-high stockings
Black pump. Black hat. Black dress.
Black eyes.
This juice makes you wise
Allows the sun to shine
Black eagle. Black butterfly.
Black tears she sometimes cries
But one sip and you’ll believe
Braided hair natural cut or curly weave
Nails with acrylic tips, and wide-shaped hips
Most men fiend to hump her
Nails cut off she has a nice touch on her jumper.
Revolutionary waters she’s your mother,
Auntie, sister-friend and daughter
You oughta recognize her eyes
She rolls them when she’s mad and
she keeps her eyes wide open whe she makes love
cause she’s bad to the BONE!
Blackgirl Juice is a nutrititional boost
Bananas Strawberries and Melanin Nectar
No average man can affect her
Ingredients are Spicy-Mild-Sweet
Burns your tongue like an Jalapeno
Pepper steak with authentic chopsticks
First round draft pick. Black Afro Pic.
The one with the fist!
Tight.
Deep.
Loose.
Have you ever tasted Black Girl Juice?
You might want to pour some inside a jar
let it linger on your top lip
take it on a trip
or dab small circles of it on your wrists ankles or ears
And if you’re daring enough to ask…..
I’ve got some Black Girl Juice
If you have an empty glass
In which fictional world/universe/land/city would you most like to live?
Submitted by glenn is the new chuck.
Most likely I would be the dangerous sexy siren dwelling in the shadows of Gotham City (aka NYC?). I would thrive off of the underground artistic cultural scene(s) and would probably make cold calculating moves that would ensure the security of my future. It wouldn't be out of fun and games or the sheer enjoyment of watching others suffer. Maybe It would be more of me living a covert life for the government.
It's all coming back to me as I think about the book The Gotham Diaries, co-written by Spike Lee's wife, Tonya Lewis Lee and Crystal McCrary Anthony. The writing, the plot, the characters were very interesting. Though there aren't any goverment covert operations in this book, there is still a strange and strong current of secretcy that exsist in the storyline.
I don't know... maybe I have this thing about being a Charlene "Charlie" Baltimore ever since I saw Geena Davis as Charlie Baltimore in Long Kiss Goodnight some years ago. Davis had suffered a case of amesia and (almost) forget her life as an assasin for the CIA. Funny how Samuel Jackson was pulled into the whole thing and funny how I let my imagination take on this persona whenever I listen to my Prodigy cd, Fat of the Land. Something about the tracks, Smack My Bitch Up, Breathe, Mind Fields and Firestarter just let my mind "go there." Don't worry, I keep my imagination all on paper or in the confinds of typing space in Microsoft Word.
So you know... in the best interest to keep my "true" identity hidden, DON'T FORWARD MY MAIL. Just look out for me in the streets of Gotham City. I'll be the one in stilettos and a satin purple trench coat. Ha!
What are your top 5 books of 2006?
Yes, I have read each of these books and each are awesome!!!!!
I actually hate the movie for this. The book is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. The movie was totally screwed up, especially Hatsumomo's exit from the story! WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Okay so I've only read the forward to this one so far.. but the forward alone is facinating. Hmmm So Bush Sr. Didn't even like Rumsfeld from the start? wow!!!
Okay.. shamless promotion. This is the anthology that was recently published that I am a part of. I have two pieces published in this book. (cheesy grin)
What's on your holiday wish list?
I'm not a materialistic chica. Yet, every once in a (Tiffany) Blue moon I like to treat myself with a special gift from Tiffany's. Well it has to be a very special occassion. I do have a couple of sterling silver jewelry pieces my mother got for me for doing well my senior year in high school. Then I went back my sophomore year in college and treated myself to the sterling silver beaded necklace for becoming so accomplished in school after a rough freshman year.
I haven't been back since.
For this Christmas, I would like to give my unborn child something very special, the Tiffany Sterling Silver teething ring. Once it's born I would like to get its name and birthday inscribed on it.
Corny?
Perhaps.
I just want it to be something special.
Nevertheless.... I'm still contemplating on this thought. However, since I've been working in Bethesda and pass by the Tiffany's in Chevy Chase every evening, I can't say it hasn't been tempting to pull over and quickly duck into the store.
