Vox Hunt: 2008 Mix Tape
If you were to make a mix tape to sum up 2008, what would the first track be? Please share that song with us.
So today was just a music day for me among other things (previous entry features Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood.")
I still haven't formulated my final thoughts for 2008. I'm juggling with a lot (as usual). I lost a close cousin Sunday from colon cancer and I'm focusing on returning to school next week and some other things.
I will say..since I was 17 (1997) my theme song has continously been the timeless combination sounds of samples of Mick Jager's and the Andrew Oldham Orchestra creation and Richard Ashcroft's lyrics. This combination known as
The Bittersweet Symphony has been with me as I grew out of my teenage years and into adulthood. It spoke to my life so much so that I'm seeking and hoping to receive the proper permission to use some of the lyrics within my forthcoming novel.
(seriously crossing fingers with that one since there was a copyright controversy over the song between Ashton and Jagger.)
Either way.... As I go back and reflect on 2008 and perhaps eventually spew some thoughts about it.. Bittersweet Symphony will be playing somewhere in the background nearby.
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
No change, I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold , I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no
Well, I've never prayed,
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind , I feel free now
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now
No change, I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold , I am here with my mold
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no
(Well have you ever been down?)
(I can't change, I can't change...)
(Ooooohhhhh...)
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, trying to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
You know I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold, no,no,no,no,no
I can't change my mold, no,no,no,no,no
I can't change my mold, no,no,no,no,no
(It justs sex and violence melody and silence)
(It justs sex and violence melody and silence)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)
(It justs sex and violence melody and silence)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)
(Been down)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)(Lalalalalalaaaaaaaa...)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)
